Welcome

Welcome to the website for Standard Translatable English.

Standard Translatable English (STE) is a mini language for explaining complex concepts using a very small set of simple words. More than that, it is a way of thinking about those concepts and breaking them down into their parts. Above all, it is clear, explicit, and translatable into other languages. An explanation in STE can be quite long, but it captures the pragmatic, semantic, and social connotations of the concept all at the same time.

STE is a variant of Minimal English as discussed by Professor Anna Wierzbicka and Professor Cliff Goddard. The core of both STE and Minimal English is the Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach to semantic explication. If you’d like to know more about the research which underpins Standard Translatable English and Minimal English, I suggest reading this paper, or visiting the website nsm-approach.net.
